Index of Geographical names of Nepal - Far Western Development Region - Volume V

Foreword

The first edition of the "Index of Geographical Names of Nepal" was compiled by Survey Department and published in five volumes by the Mapping Sub-Committee of the then National Council for Science and Technology in 1987-88. The names were basically collected from the very old 1" = 1 Mile topographical maps of Nepal published by Survey of India in 1950's - 60's. Lot of development has been made in the field of mapping in Nepal since then. A new series of topographical base maps at the scale of 1:25,000 for the terai and the mountainous areas and 1:50,000 for the high mountains and the Himalayan areas were completed during the period 1992 to 2002. A complete digital topographic database of the country based upon these new topographic base maps were compiled during 1996 to 2002. Due to these developments Survey Department did have an inventory of more complete list of geographical names not only because they were based on more larger scale mapping but also because they were more current. The publisher of the First Edition of the "Index of Geographical Names" was already dissolved; and the digital data including the list of geographical names were held at the National Geographic Information Infrastructure Programme (NGIIP) of Survey Department. It was therefore considered appropriate for NGIIP to compile the Second Edition and publish them in the interest of all the users. This work is the outcome of these efforts.

In the current context, while hard copy library edition is still very important for reference, most of the users look for information in the internet. Due to this reason, we have published this edition in hardcopy book format and this is also made available in our official website www.dos.gov.np as well in our data portal www.dosm.gov.np and www.ngiip.gov.np This arrangement, we hope, will highly benefit our users.

In conclusion, this edition has been prepared as a companion index to our base maps and the NTDB and it should not be confused as the official gazetteer of geographical names of the Government Nepal. However, since no such official gazetteer does exist in Nepal, we do hope that this will serve as a very important reference in the field of geographical names in Nepal.

While all possible efforts were made to depict the information correctly, some errors may have crept in and we look forward for valuable comments and notification from the users if any mistakes are found.
