Index of Geographical names of Nepal - Far Western Development Region - Volume V

Explanatory notes

The geographical names presented in this volume are derived from the topographical maps (1:25 000 scale) of Lumbini Zone published in 1993, topographical maps of Eastern Nepal (1:25 000 and 1:50 000 scales) published in 1997 and topographical maps of Western Nepal (1:25 000 and 1:50 000 scales) published in 2001. All these maps, the base maps of Nepal, were published by Survey Department of The Government of Nepal.

The names of different features presented in the maps were collected in the field with the help of local people in Nepali language and are approved by the local authorities as far as possible. Those names were translated into English language following the transliteration rules in practice in Survey Department.

All these base maps have been converted into digital form by Survey department and are available for the map users in PC ARCINFO coverage format. During digitization, the location of label points, representing the feature names, are placed in such a way that they locate the features in a best possible way. The digital data are stored for each and every map sheet.

The digital data layer of settlement names was intersected with that of administrative boundaries and the projection system of the resulting data layer converted into geographical projection system with latitude and longitude as the coordinate system. From this data layer the settlement names, name of VDC / Municipality, name of districts, latitude and longitude are extracted and saved as database file in Dbase IV format. Each of these database file is enriched by adding names in Nepali and names and other attributes of other geographical features like rivers, canals, roads, ridges, passes, goths, kharkas and peaks. The names of the features have been verified with the original names available in Survey Department.

In this volume, list of settlements, list of rivers, list of canals, roads and ridges and list of passes, Goths, kharkas and peaks are presented. For each district, list of settlements is presented by VDC / Municipality in alphabetical order. Each settlement has a reference to the base map as well. Since, the linear features extend beyond one district in most of the cases; lists of such features are presented separately after the lists of settlements. Each feature has a reference to the base map apart from other attributes.
